Episode Twenty-Nine

For once it is all fun and games, as Ravi and Sonia welcome David Leschinsky from Eureka! into Studio-A to talk about games and puzzles.

Plus, Peter Bebergal belts himself in for an overloaded DriveTime Cultural Minute Package:(QuickTime, 09:17)

Hey Ravi, the link to episode 29 is broken.

Link isn't working, Ravi.

The link isn't working and please don't make us wait another day

:(

Ravi said...

hmmm.... it works for me. And it downloaded to my iTunes a-ok.

I'll poke around a bit...

I'm "rederiving" the file on archive.org to see if that helps out. I've checked on two different machines here after clearing cache -- in multiple browsers and iTunes -- and it works fine.

It could be crankiness on archive.org's part.

If all else fails, I can reupload the entire file (but I don't think the problem was with the upload).

The link: http://ia301207.us.archive.org/1/items/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov

comes up in both Firefox and IE as "Ain't there."

I cleared my cache as well. If you go to archive.org and hit the Episode 29 link, right click on the QuickTime download, and try to download, Firefox pops its download window and immediately shows it finished, but there's nothing there.

If you try a right click download in IE on the same page, you get "IE cannot establish a connection with the server."

Isn't technology fun?? :)

Love you guys anyway...I know you'll suss it out.

Regards,
Joe C.

thanks for the specifics Joe C! I tested over the phone with a friend, as well, and he got the same thing (or actually didn't get, I guess).

But he couldn't even see the topic level directory of http://ia301207.us.archive.org , which is not just the DriveTime file.

So I think something is a little iffy with archive.org

I've reported "an error" on their site about this and I've queued up the file to rederive the meta-data. It's still waiting to do that after 15 minutes (usually it's near instantaneous) -- so I think they might be having some issues or slowdown.

Still doesn't answer why I can pull it down.

Ugh! I was so happy to get this up this morning and it seems for naught. The few times I've experienced any issues with archive.org, they seem to work themselves out.

I'll check again later tonight.

Thanks (all) for your patience! :-)

Wow... that was a great episode!
I had to get to it through Archives.org (I saw your help desk post in the forums there Ravi!)

So for now here's the link until Archive's fixes it, if that's ok with you Ravi?

http://www.archive.org/details/DriveTime_29

I liked it. :D Little washing out of you guys on film during the Eureka interview by the long awaited Sun but it was fun. :D

Hey Ravi, elledeegee's solution works, if you'd like you can change the link to http://www.archive.org/download/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov (it's from the archive.org site).

Ravi said...

Hmmm... curious.

http://www.archive.org/download/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov redirects me to http://ia301206.us.archive.org/1/items/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov

But since this seems to be working for "the outside world", I've updated the link.

Thanks for the sleuthing -- still a bit flummoxed over this.

Hi Ravi,

Try this link:

http://ia301206.us.archive.org/1/items/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov

Once again, AWESOME EPISODE!

I got worrried there for a sec. with the link snafu. I'm addicted and need my weekly DriveTime fix.

Honestly, I lasted two Deal or No Deal shows before realizing how dumb it is. DriveTime keeps me coming back for more. Wish your episodes were longer.

all the best,
e-kay

Wow! Now not even the direct link to the file on Archives.org is working. :( I was going to watch it again.

Just thought I'd bring that to your attention.

Insomnia can be fun. Here I am up at 4am watching Drive Time. I figured you'd have the archive.org unpleasantness worked out by now, and I was right!

One suggestion on the Eureka! segment. When you dropped off David, it might have been nice to just get a little shot of the outside of his store. Good segment, though. What a great place to get gifts.

HI Ravi, I tried it - the link is not working for me at home and at work.

Anonymous said...

It works and looks great! I resolved the issue by allowing scripts for the different sites. It seems new internet security updates were stoping the movie playback.

Ravi said...

I did get a response on the archive.org forum (from someone who maybe is with archive.org?) -- that it appeared the server was down.

The file did rederive and now when I select I get a different server address:

http://ia301206.us.archive.org/1/items/DriveTime_29/drivetime_29.mov

I tested over the phone again with a friend and he's not able to access any thing off of that server (if he goes to the root at http://ia301206.us.archive.org )

So that would confirm that this is some sort of server issue at archive.org (as opposed to any particular problem with the file).

If it *still* persists on Monday, I can put another copy on my own server space. But I'm hoping archive.org works themselves out (since many other folks have content on those servers!)

I am going to update the link on the front page here to that new URL.

Peter Bebergal said...

Not that I was in any way obsessively checking to see when the link was working, but I happened to notice while I was doing something completely unrelated to checking to see if it was working that it is, indeed, working.

Ravi said...

excellent peter! Did you via direct URL or through an aggregator (iTunes, Fireant)?

Hopefully this was an isolated incident.

Peter Bebergal said...

Direct. iTunes does not seem to be working, though. I jsut checked.

Ravi said...

iTunes may only cycle through once a day, so it might take a day to update.

Dashiell said...

fyi, it came through on my iTunes this evening.

lots of costume changes in this episode!

Ravi said...

thanks for the info dashiell. And yes, lots of costume changes -- soon we'll be like a production of Beatlemania!

david -- continuous motion action (almost head-on action!) :-0

Ravi said...

waveybrain -- smut like that belongs on the cutting room floor. (cue awkward silence).

Actually if you look through past episodes, there are hints of "kiss moments" (between me and Sonia).

I guess it would feel awkward showing everyone your affections on film depending how you both feel about it.

Some things are just not meant to be on film... they're personal. :P

I was a little disappointed at the beginning of your DriveTime Cultural Moment. From the way you said it, I thought perhaps you had spied Jesus Christ on the streets of Boston...

A little humor with the "placeholder" image for the movie...

you don't even know how excited (and surprised) i was that danielson famile was mentioned! they are a bit odd, but splendid and i really look forward to seeing them next week. if you like them, may i suggest sufjan stevens and half-handed cloud if you haven't listened to them already?

did anyone ever tell you you look like ray ramano?

Anonymous said...

David Leshinsky sounds exactly like Alan Alda if you just listen to his voice - but why doesn't he wear a seatbelt!?
I thought Pavement was grunge not rock?

Ravi said...

The episode difficulties left me a bit distracted, but thanks for all the comments and troubleshooting.

Noel b -- I missed this latest comment in all the hub-bub! Thanks again for the video comment and iTunes observation. We'll be entering a new phase of DriveTime tomorrow which will be dependent on such contributions from our global audience!

lehsa -- Your thought bubbles are right on!

k -- thanks for the music tips! Sonia seems to be warming up to Danielson... so maybe she'll come along with me to see them. Lots of good music coming to Boston -- Dungen tonight (but I may not make it, I'm a little under the weather).

abbyladybug -- Pavement was big back in the Oberlin days, but I've still never really gotten into them... but after Peter's rave, I think I'll have to!

johnny -- I think David had his seat belt on. It may be on the cutting room floor... maybe we should do a Batman TV series style close shot of us clasping on our seat belts for a kind of PSA version of DriveTime.
