Episode Six

Ravi welcomes Kim Watkins of Beyond Tomorrow -- a science and technology television show from "Down Under" -- and lets an Australian production crew have its way with studio A. Finally, Sonia and Ravi plunder the treasures buried in the trunk.

It only took 6 episodes to get an international guest! Great job. Make sure to let us know when we can view the air segment.

The trunk is pretty cavernous.

keep it going,
-steve

Thanks spi,

You're first out of the gate! I'll let you know when their segment airs (february/march '06, I believe).

drivetimers,

i really enjoyed this episode - you maintained the character of the show and the authenticity of the project in the face of high tech and high profile guests. why do drivetime? so that people are confused when you tell them you don't make a profit.

Ravi said...

ted,

thanks for the feedback -- we're glad we've gotten our first "high profile" guests under our belts.

david -- yes, that was me. conceptually that project remains "in the trunk". i need to go through all of that material to get it together.

i'll pass along your wishes to sonia -- thanks!

Ravi does seem to have a knack for attracting the media.

I've posted a clip of the media frenzy that surrounded Ravi when he was the first car throught the I-90 connector on my blog.

Hey Ravi - I'd like to learn more about the personal story behind the guest in addition to the facts about what they are doing.

Try asking them the big WHY question.

Why does the guest do what they do? How did they get into it?

Think Tony Kahn....

Thanks.

Ravi said...

steve,

thanks for the link to the I-90 chaos -- i'll take a look to see how "Hosey" has aged in the ensuing years.

and thanks for your insights into the "WHY?" question. i'm finding that some of that stuff may be ending up on the cutting room floor -- maybe i can stretch out the duration a bit to incorporate some of that?

now, i'll have to add a "WHY?" sticky underneath the "Shut up Ravi" sticky on my shifter! ;-)

...that's me from Berlin again and this episode started great and then trotted off into the woods.. so yes, I support Steve on this one....I mean, what are these aussies doing in the U.S., apart from telling everyone in Aussie how weird the Americans are....
...And not asking a little beyond the prime interested of your guest is what hampered the last episode somewhat ....Boston being pretty far away from this city of course (but i did look up his podcasts...)..broombroombroom...

Ravi said...

zeeger,

thanks for your comments, they really do help. i'll try to stay away from veering off into the woods (metaphorically and literally!)

Brian said...

hmmm, that trunk reminds me of
something

Ravi said...

brian,

nice link there!

you know, maybe i'm getting too serious with all of this... maybe we could have some sort of recurring trunk beast character?

it would be easy in studio V -- we've got an opening from the backseat. maybe some sort of swedish trunk beast?

hey ravi, i'd like to know how you're coping with the pressure of producing a weekly show.

we all know how bloggers can suffer from burnout sometimes. how are you finding filming, editing, and uploading drive time every week so far?

Anonymous said...

I can't wait for the first drivetime fenderbender! Knock on wood ravi.

Did you at least get a mug out of the deal with the OZies?

I love the show -> can't wait to see more of the trunk!

Caught wind of DriveTime from Dens. This is great, so funny. It might be just enough to push me over the edge to replace my 3G 40GB iPod. Keep up the good stuff.

Ravi said...

ronny,

if you don't see a new episode for weeks then you'll know the burnout has hit! so far, so good -- still learning and honing this whole thing.

anonymous Mike -- re: the fender bender, last Saturday we shot the first ever "DriveTime: Weekend Edition" and a few minutes after I parked the car in Harvard Square, some woman clipped my car while doing some sort of inane parallel parking attempt. I was able to storm out into the middle of Mass. Ave and yell, "HEY! You hit my car!". She got out and apologized and we saw that my car (and hers) were none the worse for wear. I told her to be careful! Oh, if only we'd been still shooting...

thanks for your comments kdaddy, the question is will this be enough for *me* to replace my iPod?

Beyond Tomorrow, I think I watched that show an hour ago. My TiVo records it. I think it's on one of the Discovery Channels (there are like 5 of them).

Ravi said...

devodude6687 -- yes, Discovery Channel! We have cheapo sub-basic cable, so I've never seen the show.

Perhaps I'll have to upgrade!

Thanks for the comments from Down Under and welcome aboard all my new Aussie friends!

Sonia and I talked this morning about some special Aussie-themed ('Oz-themed'? Is 'Oz' offensive?) stuff for a future episode.

But, keen viewers will see some unplanned Australian nuances in the episodes immediately after this one...

Ravi,

Just watched your show on Beyond Tomorrow last nite - nice iMac. Keep up the good work! I really enjoyed it - what age is that Audi you drive? What kind of cams do you use? I'll be sure to do my best to stay tuned.

Yours Australian-ly,

Nath

Ravi said...

OG! -- welcome aboard.

Nath -- I drive a 1986 Audi 4000S (cue Audi sponsorship offer), though 'studio-V' will probably makes its debut in a few episodes. My camera is a simple mini-DV -- brand to be revealed upon sponsorship deal! ;-)

Richie -- thanks for the tourism link. I'm not sure Boston has an official phrase, but while driving it's probably something like, "Get the F*** off the road, you F**** ****!"

anonymous -- Oi Oi Oi! (is that the proper response?) I'm still getting up to speed with my Aussie speak... hmmm 'scabby'?

Mayhaps your ire is directed at Beyond Tomorrow mislabeling DriveTime as "DriveTime TV"? If so, I understand mate. Cheers! :-)

hiii Ravi,

I have just seen your episode on "Beyond Tommorow". It's really very good to see , a real differnt thing to see about how one can make use of time even while driving to the office. It's a great way to communicate with the people, to whom you have never meet before, but you know about them after a drive of just half an hour or so.

Lastly I just say keep going man and stay connected.........

Ok Buddy, Take Care

My Best Wishes are always with you

Keep Going........................
