Episode Twenty-Six

Ravi and Sonia read from the DriveTime Windshield before unveiling a new segment: Beard or No Beard. Aided and abetted by viewer comments, Ravi ponders his bearded ways. For good measure, Ravi and Sonia check in with some "Friends & Family" for their perspective.

And the end result?

I like the beard, but then I like facial hair on guys in general. :D

But the music for this vblog really drowned out your voices though it was quite appropriate. :D

Good stuff... I found you thru Yamato Damacy.

sorry I'm a dork... you didn't have music. My winamp turned on for some reason in the background. LOL

Love the vblog :D

As I suspected, The Wife did have the last word! And a bit of DriveTime minutia revealed: Sonia is Greek! Your Mom sounds wonderful. And the subtitles: so foreign-film.

ps. Ever been to Christo's in Brockton?

Great episode. I think Sonia's mom should be a regular guest.

Ravi, I hope you try a goatee. I think it would look very distinguished.

haha! any guy that has had a beard ends up here... at this same 'crossroads'.

i usually go to the goatee... but be careful if you go this route! sometimes you can go 'too far' and the only option is to shave everything.

ooo... what about a moustache?

Claire said...

I have to agree with my husband (Brad). I was thinking the whole time that a goatee is the way to go. It cuts out the whole patchiness issue, but still leaves you with some nice looking facial hair. It's the best of both worlds! Goatee!

Ravi + Sonia,

Nice, easy going, fun-filled episode. Great job! The tease for next week's BoNB result was wonderful.

Next week, you will have to come up with some distraction to push this decision out until the next sweeps week. It would be kind of like pro wrestling with a grudge tag team match followed by a return grudge tag team match, etc.

I think you should not do the Goatee. Beard or No Beard, but nothing in between.

But that's not why I'm writing.......I'm the Windshield Noter!

I was afraid after leaving the note that it would seem stalkerish. I even considerred going back and writing, "I'm not a stalker" on the note, but realized that doing so would definitely raise the "Creep Flag." If I ever see you out and about again, I'll introduce myself and prove non-stalkerness.

Excellent episode, thanks for featuring my note!

No Beard!

I love your podcaste by the way, I just found the blog.

Wow, you guys!

I am so excited to be mentioned on your show.

I feel like a Drivetime Guest now.

Whoopee!

About the beard - it seems as if Ravi is reluctant to part with it. Just keep it.

If my pro-beard vote doesn't help, then toss a coin and stick with the outcome.

By the way, you can just call me "Java." :)

Ravi, you have a nice face without the beard.

But if you like to stroke it for pondering and thinking deep thoughts, check this out:

The Doorknocker gives you the best of both worlds. You get the tidy beard and the clean shaven cheeks.

Awesome show!

i thought it would be appropriate to comment in video.

(yes i am in Australia - Sydney and a Drive Time watcher from episode 3, so i was quite suprised to see an Austalian journalist jump into your car)

but for those requiring subtitles:

Hi Ravi,

Apologies for the pram perspective, but i was hoping the beard or no beard debate was still open and clearly i vote for beard. But with one condition, you HAVE to trim....
Bye,

Beard.
I'm a hairless male (I went five weeks without shaving last semester and only one of my three roommates noticed, and nobody else in the entire university). I always wish that I could grow a beard. So since I can't, I think that if you have the option, you might as well go for it.
Plus, it's probably fun to play with, and you could trim it to be neater and less scraggly.
I also think that your salt and pepper argument is good.
I must also note that the Fu Manchu was sported by Frank Zappa, and so is probably a pretty good idea.

"I found you thru Yamato Damacy."

That's the best thing I've heard all day! Like I was saying, "We are the vlogophere." XD

And, I'm for the beard, but I'm also for a haircut. Hairy is okay, but scraggly just says "Mountain man." So if you start wearing flannel and carrying an ax...

And good work on the subtitles!

I found your last Beard or No Beard Segment nice although i found it very American Idol Esque when the episode lacked a conclusion. Also, I liked the language aspect of it when sonya and her mother were conversing, something to be repeated in my opinion. I watch your 'cast weekly as a guilty friday morning pleasure during my own commute, by subway, from Manhattan to School in the Bronx. I'll be honest though, when i first read about your podcast, it was right after I had received a video ipod for Xmas and was looking for free content to fill it with, after weeding out a lot of the content that didn't interest me, I found Drivetime, and as a fellow commuter i was instantly intrigued and i have been hooked ever since. Thanks for making friday mornings a little more interesting. - Nick B., 16 NYC

I've been "off-the-grid" this weekend, but am delighted by the beard-centric conversations and wanted to chime in myself!

lehsa -- Now I'm curious as to what the "appropriate" music was!

tedsox -- international flair is always good...

joe c -- keep track of all the minutia. We may have DriveTime Trivia some day! *I* have never been to Christo's, but we did drive by it yesterday. I'll leave it to Sonia to comment on her Christo's experience...

thanks brad and claire -- the goatee is gaining ground!

shel -- your Selleck-centric examples were down right chilling!

hey ken -- I assure DriveTime viewers that we will resolve the "Beard or No Beard" question... as to when?

molly!!! -- the DriveTime Windshield author speaks! We have your note in the official DriveTime scrapbook -- we look forward to your next one!

welcome aboard katie!

java -- your coin toss idea might just be crazy enough to work.

e-kay -- thanks for the visual aid. I would lean to either the Doorknocker or the Napoleon III Imperial.

tacohead -- noted.

Wow noel -- this *may* be the first video comment that's been posted. Wonderful! You seem to be strolling through a lovely warm pastoral land...

noah -- your Zappa reasoning scores big points!

hey jeshii! we aspire to the person-specific subtitle technology that you have mastered so well!

ncb -- american idolesque... no good? or good? don't worry, it will all get resolved in the end. the tricky thing is... one can *always* ponder, "Beard or No Beard"

do not underestimate the power of the beard.
how about on of these?

Ravi looking at Sonia: You don't think that a note on the windshield is one step away from...

Ravi turns to camera: The drive time stalker!

Excellent!

And those pings!

Ping!

Nice. But the ping should actually go on BEARD and a 'gong' should go on NO BEARD.

Or the other way around depending on which vote you favor.

Sonia's mom: "I welcome you!"

Ha!

Ravi,

I agree with Sonia if you want to keep it you should at least trim it. I was thinking though how bout for the summer you Shave it off. In the winter grow it again. It gives you the best of both worlds.

Ravi said...

brian -- I'll consider flying "the Koop"!

steve -- the pings keep it unbiased!

ken -- a good suggestion. I think we still have our Science Friday prop that we actually spent some DriveTime budget on.

manblogger641 -- the off with the summer approach with a preceding trim may be the way to go.

This was the most enjoyable episode yet! Worth the wait.

Hello Ravi its Lavi...

We have a similar name, so I hope my post makes it to the Drivetime Glovebox.

I say BEARD just because I have one off and on.

I started watching your video podcast around episode 18 or so. For some reason, I thought you were in Siberia. I guess the cold and the bright light coming in made it look like that. I was gonna say what the heck is this Indian doing all the way in Siberia. Indians are all over the place!! I watched the other episodes and found out you were not in Siberia, but all those episodes got me totally hooked.

I love Drivetime. I think its great.

Anyway, you and Sonia have a great time, I will write more later.

Thanks,
Lavi Singh

In response to your comment,
"We have your note in the official DriveTime scrapbook -- we look forward to your next one!"

Sounds like a challenge.
I'll see what I can do.

RAVI,

Funny you should ask about the music... Winamp was on the 1920s radio network channel (look that up under Google for the actual link.) Good channel if you like oldies like Frank Sinatra and Big Bands like Jimmy Dorsy. Good stuff and what played was apt too LOL so I thought you had music on the blog.

Ravi, Sonia, this was a wonderful episode had me laughing - Sonia, your mom is so great. How about getting Vijey to weigh in on the beard? . . . ON DRIVETIME! Yes! Sonia is right. You should trim or cut hair. I cut my hair and then realized that most people with beards keep them trimmed really short these days. Unfortunately I am bound to grow mine until I am free.

JavaBeanRush said...

I haven't seen the next show yet- the one where you finally make your decision about the beard.

Looking at the screen grab I'd say that you decided to keep the beard.

I don't know why; it just seems that way.

Now let me go see . . .

Ravi said...

thanks justin -- we'll try to get back on the Thursday/Friday posting schedule... next week maybe!

lavi -- it actually felt less like Siberia this past winter than in previous ones. I think you're the first "rhymes with Ravi" commenter!

johnny -- I really need a haircut. That bothers me more than the beard (though I did trim the beard, so that's probably why).
